A few words about FUBAR

Since its inception by famed cruiser, Bruce Kessler, the idea of an organized fleet of owner operated long range yachts venturing into Mexico have grown to the premier power boating event on the West Coast. The mission was simple, provide support and fun for about fifty boats with varied range, owner experience and needs all going together to Baja California. The execution is far from simple.

Val and Kemp with the outstanding support of the San Diego Yacht Club dedicated over a year to organizing the rally. Every detail was covered, every possible need of the boaters, the meals—(oh the meals!) the moorage, medical support, mechanical support, immigration, education and most of important the fun was met.

For those of us with more extensive cruising but little Mexico experience the value came with the vast amount of “Mexico lingo” provided by the process. The boats that came from the Pacific Northwest had already seen heavy sea conditions, long overnight watches and coastal navigation. We inherently have anchoring experience and used to “being on the hook” and dealing with dinghy launches and such. Many of the local boats did not have this experience and great care was given to help them along. At the first meeting it was asked how many had done overnight trips or anchored their boats, an alarming amount had not. By the time we finished we were all veterans.

Whether experienced off shore cruiser, Northwest inland veteran or Southern Californian dock sitter, FUBAR will give you the confidence and experience needed to set off on your own. I would encourage anyone who has thought about Mexico and beyond but were held back by lack of experience to join the 2010 FUBAR cruise—you will not regret it!
